Walter Marvin Koenig (born September 14, 1936 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actor , director and screenwriter .

Life

Koenig was born as the son of the businessman Isadore Koenig and his wife Sarah (née Strauss). His parents were Russian Jews who lived in Lithuania before they emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States, and they originally had the last name Koenigsberg . After the family moved to Manhattan , Koenig went to school there. As a communist, Koenig's father was under surveillance by the FBI .

After graduating from high school, Koenig attended Grinnell College in Grinnell , Iowa , Iowa . He later received his bachelor's degree in psychology from UCLA . After one of his professors encouraged him to become an actor, he attended the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater with Dabney Coleman , Christopher Lloyd , and James Caan .

Since the early 1960s he played in various TV productions. He gained fame through the portrayal of Pavel Chekov in the science fiction series Spaceship Enterprise . In the 1990s he appeared repeatedly in the role of Alfred Bester in the series Babylon 5 .

He played a guest role in the fan project Star Trek: New Voyages . There he played the role of Pavel Chekov again in the episode To Serve All My Days .

On September 10, 2012, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . This is located near the star of his Star Trek colleague George Takei .

Private

Koenig has been married to Judy Levitt since 1965 and had a son, Andrew Koenig (* 1968; † 2010). His daughter, Danielle Koenig, is married to comedian Jimmy Pardo , with whom she has a child.

Koenig has been committed to the refugees and victims of the military dictatorship in Myanmar for years .

The German synchronization was done by Elmar Wepper (ZDF episodes of the series Raumschiff Enterprise and movies) and Martin Umbach (Sat.1 synchronized version of Raumschiff Enterprise ). In the movies Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock and Star Trek: Meetings of Generations he was voiced by Frank Glaubrecht . In Babylon 5 he was dubbed by Till Hagen . In the feature film Moontrap (1989) Koenig was voiced by Ekkehardt Belle . Ekkehardt Belle spoke to astronaut Jason Grant (Walter Koenig) again in 2014 for the additional scenes in the German “Moontrap” -BD / DVD from Digidreams Studios.
