Along the southern edge of the urban area of Grinnell runs from west to east of Interstate Highway 80 , which is the shortest connection from Des Moines to Chicago. The US Highway 6 runs in a west-east direction through the urban area of Grinnell and intersects the Iowa Highway 146 in the center . All other roads are subordinate, partly unpaved roads or inner-city connecting roads.
In Grinnell a west-east running railway line of the BNSF Railway crosses a north-south line of the Union Pacific Railroad . The former train station at the intersection of the two lines is now used as a restaurant.
With the Grinnell Regional Airport there is a small airfield for general aviation in the southern part of the city . The nearest commercial airport is Des Moines International Airport (105 km west-southwest).

The city was founded in 1854 by Vermont lawyer and politician Josiah Bushnell Grinnell . On April 28, 1865, the place was incorporated as an independent municipality.
The city was at the intersection of two railway lines. A stretch of the Rock Island Line ran from east to west . A line of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway later taken over by the North Western ran north-south . As a result, the city quickly developed into the largest town in the entire county.
Before leaving town, Josiah Grinnell founded the Trustees of Iowa College in 1846 , which later became known as Grinnell College .
