Danai Jekesai Gurira (born February 14, 1978 in Grinnell , Iowa ) is an American actress , activist and screenwriter . She is committed to equal rights for women and girls.

Life

Danai Gurira's parents are from Zimbabwe . She began her acting career in 2004 with an appearance on the television series Criminal Intent . She then played the illegal immigrant Zainab in the 2007 film A Summer in New York - The Visitor . Appearances in various series and film productions followed, such as Wen die Geister liebe , Law & Order , My Soul to Take and Lie to Me . From 2010 to 2011 she played a supporting role in the drama series Treme .

She became known to a wider audience in 2012 when she starred as the mysterious swordsman Michonne on the television series The Walking Dead . In 2018, she took on the role of Okoye in the Marvel film adaptation of Black Panther and reappeared in the same role in the chronological sequel Avengers: Infinity War in the same year.

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

In the same year she took part in the Reebok campaign #bemorehuman .
