action

Prof. Walter Vale, who has tried to reduce his work to a minimum since the death of his wife, is sent to a conference in New York. When he returned to his apartment there after many years, he met the two illegal immigrants Tarek and Zainab there. The couple's apartment was illegally rented out and so the couple rushed out of the apartment for fear that the authorities might find out about them. However, out of compassion, Walter lets her stay with him for a while. He befriends Tarek and receives lessons from him on the Djembé . Walter, who previously tried unsuccessfully to learn to play the piano, regains something of his zest for life.

When the two are traveling together, Tarek is mistakenly accused of having skipped the subway entrance control. Walter has to watch powerlessly as his friend is led away. At home he learns from Zainab that she and Tarek are staying illegally in the USA and that Tarek is in danger of being deported. Walter hires a lawyer at his own expense and visits Tarek in prison, who encourages him to continue to practice drumming. One day, Tarek's mother, Mouna, rings Walter's doorbell to check on her son. Walter explains the situation to her, shows her the deportation prison where her son is being held, and introduces her to Tarek's friend Zainab. Walter and Mouna get closer; one evening he takes it out and visits with her the musical The Phantom of the Opera , whose music inspired Tarek.

Suddenly Walter receives a message from Tarek. When asked by the authorities, Mouna and Walter learn that their worst fears have come true and that he has been deported. Tarek's mother follows her son to Syria so that she can be near him. Walter, on the other hand, plays on his Djembé in a subway station on Broadway, on behalf of Tarek, who can no longer do this .

criticism

“'The Visitor' is one of those silent films in which every gesture and every reaction, no matter how small, has a meaning and in which the drama takes a back seat to the observation of sensations and feelings. .... 'The Visitor' turns out to be one of those rare films that are more interested in people than in events. "
