Marian Hall Seldes (born August 23, 1928 in New York City , New York - † October 6, 2014 ) was an American actress .

Life

Marian Seldes was the daughter of the journalist and publisher Gilbert Seldes. Her uncle was the journalist George Seldes . Marian studied acting at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse . Her first television role she played in an episode of the television series Hallmark Hall of Fame from 1952. After a few other guest roles in television series, she appeared on the side of Robert Wagner in the western Avenger of the Disinherited (1957). In the film drama Crime & Punishment, USA (1959) she played one of the bigger roles.

Seldes received a Tony Award in 1967 for her role in the play A Delicate Balance . In the same year she became a lecturer at the Juilliard School of Drama , where she taught among others Kevin Kline , Laura Linney and Kevin Spacey . She worked there until 1991.

From 1974 to 1982 the actress' voice could be heard on the CBS Radio Mystery Theater show . In the film drama Finger - Zärtlich und brutal (1978), Seldes played one of the bigger roles alongside Harvey Keitel . During this time she was seen in numerous plays and was nominated for the Tony Award in 1971, 1978, 1999 and 2003 . In the film drama Dreams to the End of the World (1998) she played the terminally ill mother of the mentally disabled Ricky Schroth ( Kevin Bacon ).

Seldes was married to the film producer Julian Claman from 1953 to 1961 , with whom she had a daughter. In 1990 she married the director and screenwriter Garson Kanin , who died in 1999.
