action
Ten-year-old Harriet Frankovitz grew up in a small town in America in the sixties. She lives with her significantly older sister Gwen with her mother, a hotel owner with alcohol problems.
One day Leah Schroth and her mentally handicapped son Ricky drive through town in a car. Due to a breakdown they are forced to spend a few days in the motel. It turns out that Leah has cancer and wants to take her son to an institution where he would be looked after after she dies. While the car is being repaired, Ricky befriends the imaginative Harriet.
Mrs. Frankovitz dies in a car accident. Gwen admits that she is really Harriet's mother herself.
Reviews
David Kronke wrote in the Los Angeles Times on September 11, 1998 that the film benefits from the "strong portrayal" of the debuting Evan Rachel Wood, but otherwise offers little to recommend. Bacon seems like a student who is just learning to act. Direction is sensitive, but it works like a patchwork.
Film-Dienst wrote that the film addresses the "social loss of innocence" . He fails " because of his indecisive attitude between psychological fidelity and the naivety of his narrative" , leads "into a no man's land between children's and adult films" and gives away the skills of Kevin Bacon.
