Thomas Schleicher
Thomas Schleicher (born November 21, 1972 in Salzburg ; † November 2, 2001 there ) was an Austrian judoka .
biography
Thomas Schleicher started his career at JC Straßwalchen. In 1992 he won the Junior European Championships up to 71 kg. This year Patrick Reiter won the same weight class at the Junior World Championships and Norbert Haimberger the European title in the general class. Despite the great competition in his own team, he prevailed at the Austrian championships and won his first men's title. Schleicher established himself in the weight class up to 71 kg and won bronze twice at European championships . In 1996 he started at the Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA), but did not manage to place. In the same year he was voted Salzburg Sportsman of the Year. His career ended abruptly when he was sentenced to five years in prison for drug trafficking in September 1998. In 2001, he committed suicide in his prison cell.
