Edward Benjamin Scheve (also Eduard B. Scheve ) (born February 13, 1865 in Herford , † 1924 in Longmont , Boulder County , USA ), was a German-American composer and music teacher.

Life

Edward Benjamin Scheve 's father was Eduard Scheve , Baptist pastor and founder of the Evangelical Free Church Diakonie, his mother was his wife Adelheid, née Schöneborn (1836–1869), who was probably the first deaconess of the German Baptist Union. He was the eldest of four children born from this relationship. His mother died just four years after he was born after suffering from serious cancer. His father married Berta Albers for the second time in 1870, with whom he had six other children.

After attending high school in Cologne and the Geisenheim Institute, he studied piano with Konig , organ with Friedrich Grunicke and composition with Becker in Franz Kullak's New Academy of Music in Berlin from 1885–88 . From 1886 to 1888 he also taught at this academy. In 1888, at the age of 23, he emigrated to the USA. He first lived in Rochester and worked as a teacher and organist at the First Baptist Church . In 1902 he was appointed director of the German-American Conservatory and organist of the First German Baptist Church in Chicago . Since 1906 he taught composition at Grinnell College in Iowa. 1912 was named music director of the college.

Scheve had been married to Lina Amelia, nee Grosch (1866–1955), since 1890. The common grave is in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell .

He also wrote many songs, hymns and smaller piano pieces.
