The Berliner Alte Philharmonie at Bernburger Strasse 22 in Berlin-Kreuzberg was built in 1876 as a roller skating rink and then used as a concert hall. It had a total of over 2500 places. It was used for concerts as well as for carnival balls, lectures, passion plays, customer events. During the Second World War it was destroyed by an aerial bomb .

history

In 1876 the open roller skating rink "Central Skating Rink", which could also be used as an ice rink, including restoration and stage, was set up on the parcel at Bernburger Strasse 22a / 23 by an English stock corporation. In 1882 the company went bankrupt and the company's managing director bought the Rohlschuhbahn. The hall operator Ludovico Sacerdoti later decided to rent out the large hall for concerts. To this end, he planned the construction of a new entrance building and the creation of garden walkways for the exhibition. The concert agent Hermann Wolff found the hall of the roller skating rink while looking for a venue for a Berlin guest performance by the then famous Meininger Hofkapelle . When Wolff took over management of the Berlin Philharmonic , which was founded in May 1882, the address developed into a hub for music events in Berlin. In 1888, Sacerdoti decided to have the hall converted into a concert hall by Franz Heinrich Schwechten , the architect of the Anhalter Bahnhof . A coffered ceiling with sound-absorbing plaster ornaments and two skylights were added. Medallions with portraits of composers were placed on the walls . In addition, Sacerdoti decided to equip the hall with 1614 free-standing wooden chairs so that the hall could be more easily cleared for balls. The hall was renamed the Philharmonie in 1888 after the renovation . In July 1932 Albert Einstein gave his farewell lecture in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic. The Philharmonie was also the venue for the “ Stenographers Day ” and the “ Reichskettkochens ”.

In 1898 part of the garden was built over for a skylight hall and a foyer. In addition, Sacerdoti bought the building on the neighboring property on Köthener Strasse. In the new hall known as the Beethoven Hall, another hall with 1000 seats was created, mainly for receptions or private celebrations or as an additional break hall. Later, movie projectors were installed in the new hall for occasional use as a cinema.

In 1882 members of the Bilseschen Kapelle went into business for themselves and founded the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert agent Wolff arranged for them to use the roller-skating rink as a concert hall. In 1920 a demonstration against Einstein's theory of relativity was held in the old Philharmonic Hall. In 1930 the owner Sacerdoti died and a community of heirs took over the property. The four Jews from the orchestra were driven into exile by the Nazis. In the same year the orchestra was given the title Reichsorchester , which was subordinate to Joseph Goebbels. On the afternoon of 30 January 1944, joined Heinrich Schlusnus with the Winterreise by Franz Schubert on. On the same day, the building was bombed by the Allies . In 1952 the ruins were blown up and the rubble applied to today 's Teufelsberg . Today a plaque commemorates the old Philharmonic.
