Hermann Wolff (concert agent)

Hermann Wolff (born September 4, 1845 in Cologne , † February 3, 1902 in Berlin ) was a German concert promoter and journalist. He is the father of the conductor Werner Wolff .

Life

Wolff's father was a businessman in Cologne, who moved with his family to Berlin in 1855. Hermann Wolff married the Austrian actress Luise Schwarz (1855–1935) there in 1875. In 1880 he opened a “concert bureau”, which then also organized the subscription concerts of the Philharmonic Orchestra ( Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra ) founded on May 1, 1882 , and provided the orchestra with well-known conductors and soloists, which quickly made it popular.

Wolff was soon considered to be the most important concert organizer in Germany. His circle of friends included numerous famous musicians, including Johannes Brahms , Hans von Bülow , Joseph Joachim , Arthur Nikisch , Clara Schumann and Peter Tschaikowsky .

After his death, the concert agency was continued by his widow.

Honors

In 2005, the 180-seat choir hall of the Berlin Philharmonic was renamed the Hermann Wolff Hall. It has since been used for chamber concerts and introductory events before concerts in the great hall of the Philharmonie.
