To the north is the much larger also inhabited island Hundvåg , to the east, separated by the Steinsøyosen Ormøy and the small archipelago island Dynamittskjeret . To the west are the islands of Engøy and Buøy . Immediately in front of the north-west bank, sometimes only 15 meters away , is the smaller island of Steinsøyholmen , to which a small bridge leads. The small archipelago island of Steinsøyskjeret is located off the southeastern tip .

The island stretches over 460 meters from northwest to southeast with a maximum width of about 240 meters. It reaches a height of up to 38 meters. Steinsøy is built up in the northern part and there are also moorings. In the southern half of the island is partly forested and falls as a steep coast to the south bank.

In the southeast of the island there is an archaeological site dating back to a Stone Age settlement.
