Buøy is an island in the Byfjord in the Norwegian province of Rogaland . It belongs to the Hundvåg district of the city of Stavanger .

geography

The island covers an area of ​​0.6 km². It is inhabited by 1261 people (as of 2017) and is densely built. The island extends from west to east over a length of 1.5 kilometers with a width of up to one kilometer.

The island is about a kilometer north of Stavanger city center, with which it is connected by bridges. Various other islands are in the immediate vicinity. To the north, only separated by the narrow arms of Bangavågen and Galeivågen , lies the larger island of Hundvåg , to which there is a connection via an artificially created isthmus .

To the east are the islands of Steinsøyholmen , Steinsøy and Ytre Vågask , to the south, only separated by the almost 100 meter wide Pyntesundet , is the island of Engøy , to which there is a bridge connection. South and southwest lie the small archipelago majors with Majorskjeret and Majorgrunnen and Tjuvholmen and the island Knudaskjeret .

The western part of the island is occupied by an industrial area, in particular Rosenberg Worleyparsons AS. In 1896 as Rosenberg Mek. Verksted founded company is particularly active in the field of equipment for the deep sea oil industry. There is residential development on the eastern half of Buøy. The Hompen sports field and wooded green areas are located in the center of the island .

The name of the island is derived from bebodd øy , which means roughly inhabited island . Buøy skole school, founded in 1861, is located on the island . In 1965 the Buøy Bakeri & Konditori bakery was founded.

In the eastern part of Buøy, at Galeivågen, archaeological remains of a Stone Age settlement have been found. In the school yard of Buøy skole there is a rune stone with a pattern from the Bronze Age, around 1000 years before the beginning of our era. The stone was found in 1922 on a hill about 200 meters northeast of the school and was removed from there in 1959.

Personalities

The Norwegian politician and mayor of Stavangers, Kari Thu (* 1939), was born on Buøy.
