Hundvåg is an island in the Byfjord in the Norwegian province of Rogaland . It belongs to the Hundvåg district of the city of Stavanger .

The island covers an area of 4.7 km². It is inhabited by 9,693 people (as of 2017) and large parts of it are densely built up. In the south-west, however, with the Trollskogen forest and in the north-east with the Lundsneset headland, there are also larger undeveloped areas on which some agriculture is practiced. The island extends from southwest to northeast over a length of 3.3 kilometers and a width of up to 2.9 kilometers.
The island is about three kilometers north of Stavanger city center, with which it is connected by bridges and tunnels. To the north is the small island of Grasholmen , to the east the islands of Sandoya , Langoya , Bjørnøy , to which a bridge leads, Roaldsøy , Ormøy , Steinsøyholmen and Steinsøy . Immediately to the south is the island of Buøy , with which there is a connection via an artificially created isthmus .
The shoreline of the island is strongly divided by bays. Larger bays are in the north Sandvågen , Lundevågen and Tømmervika and south Galeivågen and Bangavågen .
Hundvåg is integrated into the Ryfast tunnel system. South leading Hundvåg tunnel of the center of Stavanger, in north-east direction by the direction in Tau leading Ryfylke tunnel .
history
In the course of the fighting during the German occupation of Norway in 1940 during the Second World War , the Norwegian destroyer Æger of the Sleipner class was driven onto the coast of Hundvåg.
Buildings and monuments
Hundvåg Church, built in 1983, is in the interior of the island . However, the first mention of a church for the island dates back to 1300. It was located further to the east and was no longer operated in 1620. Hundvåg is also home to various prehistoric sites and graves, including the three-meter-high building stone from Husabø .
South of the island in Bangavågen is a shipwreck from the 19th century, a listed monument.
In the center of the island is the sports field used by the local sports club Hundvåg Fotballklubb .
Personalities
The politician and mayor of Stavangers, Kari Thu (* 1939), grew up on Hundvåg, the handball player Tonje Nøstvold (* 1985) began playing handball when she was a child on the island.
