The Bra Fence Cardrona (Engl. Cardrona Bra Fence ) is an equally popular as controversial tourist attraction near Cardrona in New Zealand , which was created at the beginning of the 21st century. There are currently around 1000 bras hanging on the fence .

location

The fence stood along the Cardrona Valley Road in the Valley of the Cardrona River in the Otago region on New Zealand's South Island and in 2013 was moved about 100 meters into the Cardrona Distillery's access path that leads onto the road. It is located near the settlement of Cardrona, about midway between the places Wanaka in the north and Arrowtown and Queenstown in the south.

history

The history of the fence began between Christmas 1998 and New Year 1999 when four brassieres were first discovered on a fence on an adjacent farm. Nothing is known about the motives for this; According to rumors, a group of women spent New Year's Eve at the nearby Hotel Cardrona . Over time, more passers-by hung up bras there. However, the fence only became famous when all the bras were stolen, which was eventually reported by various media and newspapers. As a result, more and more bras were hung on the fence, so that a few weeks later there were already 60 bras. In October 2000 there were about 200 bras on the fence, which was becoming a tourist attraction. At that time, media from other continents had even reported about the fence. The fence has repeatedly been the target of theft.

Despite its popularity with residents and tourists, legal disputes arose early on , as many people found the fence an embarrassment and an eyesore. It was also feared that it would distract drivers from the traffic. Finally, in 2006, all BHs, around 1500 at the time, were removed by order of the authorities after it was found that the fence was on public property.

In 2013, sheep farmer Sam Lee (according to another source, John Lee), owner of the adjoining farm, brought the attraction back to life. Lee said the responses have been mostly positive, attracting tourists and receiving bras in the mail to hang them up. In addition, the fence has become the most photographed object in the area. Surveillance cameras have been installed to stop the thefts.

Since the fence actually posed a danger to traffic, but its popularity also steadily increased, it was ultimately not removed, but moved to the entrance to the horse ranch and quad bike course The Cardrona and the Cardrona Distillery whiskey distillery 100 meters away from the busy highway. The owners of The Cardrona Kelly Spaans and Sean Colbourne took over the maintenance and protection of the fence on a voluntary basis in 2013 and have been offering tours for tourists since then, just like the owners of the whiskey distillery. By 2020 there were around 1000 bras on the fence again and old bras that have been contaminated by the weather are regularly removed to make room for new ones. The attraction is now visited by tourists from all over the world.

Breast Cancer Fundraising

In 2015 the fence was given the nickname “Bradrona” ( suitcase word from bra , English for BH , and Cardrona), which was used to collect donations for the New Zealand breast cancer association. A pink sign and a donation box were placed on the fence for this purpose. Almost 30,000 NZD (around 16,500 euros ) had been collected by 2017 . In addition, the neighboring whiskey distillery Cardrona Distillery has been issuing the special edition "The Source 'Pink' Barrel Aged Gin " once a year , from whose sale 5 NZD per bottle are donated; this raised another 5,000 NZD by 2017.

Imitations

Similar fences have been erected in various places in New Zealand, for example in Wairarapa or Nelson .
