The Cardrona River is a river in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . Together with the Hunter River, which flows into it just 700 m earlier, it is one of the first tributaries of the Clutha River five kilometers after its origin at the outflow of Lake Wanaka .
The Cardrona flows the narrow, steep-walled Cardrona Valley for 40 km to the north. This is where one of the most difficult roads in New Zealand is located, the Crown Range Road . The small town of Cardrona is on this road , with Mount Cardrona and the Cardrona ski area to the west . The river crosses east of Wanaka the State Highway 6 and then flows near Albert Town in the Clutha.
