Johann Peter Boelling (born July 28, 1773 in Elberfeld , today Wuppertal , † March 22, 1857 in Mönchengladbach ) was a textile manufacturer and mayor of Mönchengladbach.

Life

Peter Boelling was born in Elberfeld in the Bergisch district and came to Gladbach in 1798 , where he founded a textile factory in the same year. Boelling was one of the first Rhenish manufacturers to process cotton instead of traditional linen .

From his marriage to Anna Barbara Preyer two daughters were born. The family lived in a representative house on the upper Hindenburgstrasse.

Shortly after moving there, Boelling took an active part in the social life of his new place of residence. In 1801 we find him among the founding members of the "Society Recreation", which still exists today. His entrepreneurial and cultural appearance ultimately led to the fact that he was transferred to the office of Mayor of Gladbach in 1808 . In 1809 the administration of the mayor's offices of Obergeburth and Unteriedergeburth was added.

As Maire von Unterstiedergeburth he only worked for a short time, already in 1811 he gave up this office again, in Gladbach and Obergeburth he remained in office until the end of French rule on the Lower Rhine in 1814.

However, the end of his term as mayor does not mark the end of his political activities. From 1814 to 1846 Boelling was a city councilor in Gladbach, from 1826 to 1837 a deputy in the Rhenish provincial assembly .

He also expanded his business activities and participated in several textile and trading companies in the 1820s.

When the Chamber of Commerce for the Gladbach district was founded in 1838, he was elected its first chairman. He held this office until 1848.

Peter Boelling died very old on March 22, 1857 and was buried in the Protestant cemetery on Viersener Straße, the grave site is still there today.

In 2001, in memory of Johann Peter Boelling, the square in front of the recreation company building was renamed “Johann-Peter-Boelling-Platz”.
