The mayor's office at the Unterstiedergeburth (seldom also called the Unterstiedergeburt) was a mayor's office that was founded in 1798 in the north-eastern part of the Gladbach parish and which became part of the Neuwerk mayor's office , now a part of Mönchengladbach , in 1836 .

history

The mayorry of the Unterniedergeburth was founded on January 23, 1798 in the canton of Gladbach from a part of the sub-office of Gladbach, which was destroyed by the French occupation. The Canton of Gladbach was dissolved as early as June 15, 1798 and the Canton of Neersen was founded in the Arrondissement of Krefeld in the Roer department , to which the Unterstiedergeburth now belonged.

As a community with a population of less than 5,000, it was managed by a municipal agent, it was not until May 26, 1800, that Unteriedergeburth officially became a Mairie after the municipal system was discontinued .

After the end of French rule, the mayor's office fell to Prussia in the course of the Congress of Vienna on September 30, 1814, as part of the Rhine Province , and from 1816 it belonged to the newly founded Gladbach district .

In the course of a regional reform, the mayorry of the Unterstiedergeburth was on January 1st, 1836 in the newly founded mayor's office of Neuwerk , which was enlarged to include the honors Uedding and parts of the honors Lürrip and Eicken.

structure

The mayorry of the Unterstiedergeburth comprised the Kirchdorf Neuwerk as well as the farming communities Damm, Donk , Hoven and Bettrath. After the reorganization of the area on January 1, 1836, Engelbleck and Dünn were also run as separate farmers.

Surname

The name Unteriedergeburth is derived from the name of the tax district “Niedergeburth” in the northeast of the city of Gladbach , which slopes down into the Niers lowlands . In contrast, the area east of Gladbach was named Obergeburth . The Niedergeburth was divided into the northern area Unteriedergeburth and the southern area Oberniedergeburth. The name is sometimes also written as Unter- or Oberniedergebürth, the last word component is derived from the term “bühren” (= to raise, demand), which is still contained in the word “ fee ” today.

administration

At the head of the administration, a volunteer Munizipalagent and Maire and an unpaid "adjoint maire", so Councilor . The community council initially consisted of five, later of seven members. The administration was mainly responsible for keeping the newly introduced civil status registers and drawing up the budget that required approval . Unteriedergeburth did not have its own town hall ; official business was held in the private apartments of the agents, Maires or mayors. 1809–1811 and 1820–1836, Unteriedergeburth was administered by the mayor of the city of Gladbach in personal union, the current official affairs in the community, mainly keeping the civil status registers, were taken care of by the respective councilors at that time.

Residents

According to official censuses, the mayor's office at Unterniedergeburth had 2341 inhabitants in 1798, 2324 in 1821 and 2505 in 1830.

The majority belonged to the Catholic religion, which had had its own house of worship since 1802 with the monastery church, which had been rededicated as a parish church, while the small percentage of the Protestant population attended the service in Gladbach.

Cadastral parish

The cadastral area of Unteriedergeburth differed in name and scope from the civil parish. Since the creation of an original cadastre in the years 1812/1813, the name has been "Neuwerk", it refers to the former Benedictine monastery in the community . The Honschaft Uedding, which still belonged to the neighboring mayor's office in Oberniedergeburth, was already part of the cadastral community of Neuwerk in 1812. So it seems that well before 1836 the intention was to change the name of the civil parish to Neuwerk. However, it was not implemented at the time.
