The Clutha River near Roxburgh |
The Clutha River is the second longest river in New Zealand and the longest in New Zealand's South Island .
It flows through the Otago region over a length of 340 kilometers . The Clutha River is the outflow of Lake Wanaka . It is also fed by the Hāwea River - the outflow of Lake Hāwea - and the Kawarau River - the outflow of Lake Wakatipu - as well as numerous smaller rivers. Its mouth is near Balclutha . In its course, the Clutha River is dammed up to Lake Dunstan and Lake Roxburgh for power generation. Below Balclutha is the island of Inch Clutha .
The name of the river is derived from Cluaidh , the Scottish Gaelic name of the Clyde flowing through Glasgow , and was probably bestowed on it by the Scottish settlers of the region.
