The tuapeka river is a river in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . It is a tributary of the Clutha River , into which it flows at Tuapeka Mouth between Roxburgh and Balclutha .

The river is best known for its role as the center of the Otago gold rush in the 1860s. The first significant gold find in Otago was at Gabriel's Gully ( 45 ° 52 ′ 54.4 ″  S , 169 ° 40 ′ 46.7 ″  E ) near Lawrence in 1861. Tuapeka Mouth is southwest of the mouth of the river in the Clutha .
