Alexandra is a city in the Central Otago District of the Otago Regionon the South Island of New Zealand . The city is the seat of the Central Otago District Council and its administration.

Origin of name

The city, first Lower Dunstan , then Manurherikia and subsequently The Junction , was finally named in 1863 by John Aitken Connell after Princess Alexandra of Denmark , who married the then Prince of Wales , later Edward VII , in 1863 .

geography

The city is 110 km northwest of Dunein near the village of Clyde on the banks of the Clutha River , which flows there with the Manuherikia River . The Alexandra area is one of the furthest from the sea in New Zealand and one of the few regions that has a continental climate with severe winters and hot, dry summers.

At the census in 2013, the city had 4800 inhabitants. It is the largest place in Central Otago District .

history

The city emerged in the 1860s during the gold rush in Otago . After the first known gold deposits were exploited, there was a second gold rush around Alexandra , in which the river deposits of the Clutha River and its tributaries were dredged in search of further gold deposits. These extensions of the river bed are used today as reservoirs and irrigation channels for the orchards.

economy

Stone fruit in particular (especially apricots ) has become a lucrative industry and is now celebrated with a blossom festival, the Alexandra Blossom Festival , every spring. Viticulture has been added as a further branch of the economy in recent years . The Black Ridge Vineyard is said to be the southernmost growing area in the world.

traffic

Between 1906 and 1990 Alexandra was connected to the New Zealand railway network via the Otago Central Railway . The former embankment is now used as the Otago Central Rail Trail . In the urban area, State Highway 85 (also known as " The Pigroot ") meets State Highway 8 .

Attractions

Worth seeing in Alexandra are a "wobbly" bridge from 1879, for many the city's landmark, the Sir William Bodkin Museum , which shows the usual methods of gold mining, and the Tucker Hill Lookout , from where you can get a good view of the has small towns in the middle of green fruit trees.
