The Pomahaka River is a river in the southern region of Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . It is a right tributary of the Clutha River and flows south from the Old Man Range for 80 km to flow into the Clutha at Pukeawa , 20 km northwest of Balclutha . On his way he passes the Blue Mountains and the forest town of Tapanui in the region known by residents as West Otago .
For a short distance, the river forms the border between the Otago and Southland regions .
A severe flood of the Pomahaka in 1978 caused damage that led to the closure of the Tapanui branch line . Another severe flood in 1980 led to the resettlement of the village of Kelso .
Places on the river are Kelso, Tapanui, Glenkenich , Pomahaka and Rankleburn .
A right tributary is the Wairuna Stream , and left tributaries are Rankle Burn , Back Stream, and Washpool Stream .
