The Blue Mountains are a small mountain range up to 1019  m high in the Otago region on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Blue Mountains are located around 85 km west of Dunedin in the southwestern part of the Otago region . It separates the region known as West Otago, west of the mountain range, from South Otago . The mountain range runs from the Clutha River at Raes Junction and Beaumont for about 36 km in a south-westerly direction, the maximum east-west extension is about 12 km. Most of it is covered with forests made up of native and introduced tree species.

The Pomahaka River flows along the west side of the mountain range and crosses its southern end to the east. The northern and western limits are formed by the Clutha River . The mountain range is drained by tributaries of these two rivers, such as the Rankle Burn and Back Stream ( Pomahaka River ) and Blackleugh Burn ( Clutha ).

The New Zealand State Highway 90 runs along the northwestern foot of the mountains, a short stretch of the New Zealand State Highway 8 accompanies the north end of the mountains on the Clutha River . The Rongahere Road , which leads south on the west bank of the Clutha River and leads to Ronaghere , branches off from him in Beaumont . In the extreme south, the New Zealand State Highway 1 runs a short distance at the foot of the southern foothills of the mountain range. Except for a road running along the Pomahaka River valley between Pomahaka and Rankleburn, the mountains are hardly accessible by roads. The Tapanui Line led until 1978 by Tapanui and on to Heriot west of the Blue Mountains .

Places at the foot of the mountains are in the north Edievale , Raes Junction and Beaumont , to the east Rongahere and Rankleburn , south Waipahi , west Pomahaka , Glenkenich , Tapanui , Black Gully and Crookston .
