Beaumont is a small settlement in the Clutha District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

Beaumont was possibly named around 1857 after the Beaumont Burn , now the Beaumont River , which flows into the Clutha River .

geography

The settlement is on the Clutha River , six kilometers southeast of Raes Junction between Roxburgh and Balclutha . Beaumont is connected to Milton and Roxburgh by New Zealand State Highway 8 .

history

Beaumont served for eleven years as the terminus of a railway branch line that branched off from the Main South Line in Milton and reached Beaumont in 1914 . An extension to Miller's Flat was opened in 1925. This line was eventually called the Roxburgh Branch and operated until 1968. Remnants of the railway such as a cattle yard and a bridge over the Beaumont River have been preserved.
