Tapanui is a village in the Clutha District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The village is located about 30 km northeast of Gore and about 49 km northwest of Balclutha at the foot of the east lie the Blue Mountains , the highest elevation of about 12 kilometers northeast of Tapanui lying and 1,019  m high Tapanui Hill is. Good 2.5 km west of the village attracts the Pomahaka River 's meandering path to the south. About 1 km to the west, the New Zealand State Highway 90 passes the village and about 24 km to the northeast, via Raes Junction, it joins the New Zealand State Highway 8 . To the south, the village has access to the New Zealand State Highway 1 via Waipahi, which is around 18 km away .

history

The area around Tapanui developed into a center of logging with a few sawmills around 1858. After the forests had been cut down, tree nurseries were set up with government assistance and reforestation began. Planning for the place began in 1868 and in 1876 the place was upgraded to a city according to the standards of the time.

For almost 100 years the place was connected to the New Zealand railway network by the Tapanui Branch , a branch of the Main South Line . Despite its name, the branch did not end in Tapanui , but from December 1, 1880 only reached to Kelso and from April 1, 1884 to Heriot . The line was abandoned in October 1978 due to damage from severe floods caused by the Pomahaka River .

In the 2013 census, the town had 726 inhabitants, 2.8% less than in the 2006 census.

economy

The village lives primarily from agriculture and forestry, with sheep breeding being another source of income.

Attractions

Landslip Hill is located between Tapanui and Pukerau . It is known as a fossil site in New Zealand, finds can be seen in the Otago Museum in Dunedin .

Events

In New Zealand, Tapanui is linked to the chronic fatigue syndrome , initially known as " Tapanui flu " ( Tapanui flu). The doctor Peter Snow , who first documented the rise in this disease in New Zealand, lived in Tapanui at the time .

Tapanui as a film set

Tapanui was used in April 2015 as the location for a remake of Elliot, the smiley monster with Robert Redford in a leading role. The film was released in 2016 under the title Elliot, the Dragon .
