Elliot, the Smirking Monster is an American family film with musical elements from 1977. It was produced by the Walt Disney Company and is based on an unreleased short story by Seton I. Miller and SS Field, who owned the rights to Walt Disney in the 1950s acquired.

The film is set in New England in the early 20th century. The nine-year-old orphan Pete grew up with his adoptive parents, the Gogans. They treat him extremely badly, he has to work a lot and is often beaten.
One day Pete meets the friendly dragon Elliot. This can spit fire, which it uses for roasting apples. He can also make himself invisible; During the entire film he is mostly only visible to Pete, which often gets him into trouble, as he gets into trouble explaining when he is blamed for the turbulence that Elliot has caused.
After Pete and Elliot overcome the horror of their first meeting, they become friends, and together with Elliot, Pete flees from his adoptive parents. They start the persecution because they have no interest in simply letting their "belongings" escape.
In the fishing village of Passamaquoddy, Maine , Pete finds shelter with the lighthouse keeper Lampie and his daughter Nora. When the Gogans arrive, it is possible to drive them away with united forces.

Originally only an hour-long episode for Disney's television anthology was to be made from the material, but screenwriter Malcolm Marmorstein developed a full-length feature film, which is his largest project to date. It was directed by the British filmmaker Don Chaffey , who had already made two smaller Disney films in the early 1960s between two major fantasy adventures in other film productions ( Jason and the Argonauts , A Million Years Before Our Time ).
In addition to people portrayed by real actors, one of the main characters - the dragon Elliot - is portrayed by animation , for which Don Bluth was responsible. The film had its German premiere in December 1978 under the title Elliot, das Schmunzelmonster , and since 1999 it has been available on DVD in a 28-minute version (corresponding to the German theatrical version) . The song Candle on the Water (“Lichtschein auf dem Wasser”), nominated for an Oscar, is sung in the German version by Katja Ebstein .
In 2016 a remake was released with Elliot the Dragon .
