Candle on the Water is a torch song from the Disney film Elliot, the Smirking Monster (1977) by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn . Originally it was sung by actress Helen Reddy . The song was at the Oscar ceremony in 1978 as best song nomination. The German version was sung by Katja Ebstein .

In the context of the film, the song can be heard in a balcony scene. Nora (played by Helen Reddy ) sings about her fiancé Paul ( Cal Bartlett ), who has been lost at sea for over a year. Shortly before, her father Lampey ( Mickey Rooney ) tried to explain to her that her fiancé was almost certainly dead, which made her very upset.
The song appeared on the soundtrack album for the film and was also released as a single. The single reached number 27 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary .
Academy Awards
The song was nominated for "Best Song" at the 1978 Academy Awards, but lost to You Light Up My Life from the soundtrack for Star of My Life . It wasn't the only Disney song nominated that year. Someone's Waiting for You from Bernard and Bianca - Die Mäusepolizei was also nominated.
Cover versions
As with numerous Disney films, the soundtrack has been translated into different national languages, so there are different versions of the song. The German version was interpreted by Katja Ebstein as bright as the light on the water . The text was translated by Heinrich Riethmüller .
1979 appeared a Swedish version of singer Kikki Danielsson under the title Jag är ditt ljus på mörka vatten on his album Rock'n Yodel .
It was interpreted by Anneliese van der Pol on the Disney compilation Disneymania 4 .
In 2016 released Elliot, the Dragon , the real film based on Elliot, the Smirking Monster , the band Okkervil River sings the song.
