Köben Castle
Castle Köben ( Polish Zamek w Chobieni ) is a Renaissance castle in Chobienia in Lubin County in the Polish province of Lower Silesia . Historically, the castle was in the Wohlau district .
history
The place is located at an old river crossing in the breakthrough of the Oder through the north Silesian ridge. A ducal castle to secure this river crossing is documented for 1258, which was then owned by von Dohna , from 1504 by von Kottwitz . They had a renaissance castle built around 1580 using parts of the castle wall. At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was given its present-day appearance through renovations, but was rebuilt under the von Nostitz family in the 18th century.
In 1905 the castle was refurbished by Wolfgang Graf von Saurma-Jeltsch, but in 1932 it fell into the possession of the community and was requisitioned by the Reich Labor Service during World War II .
From the 1970s the castle was gutted in order to use it for administrative purposes. However, this did not happen and the building stood empty until it was repaired by private individuals.
Building
The castle is two-story with four wings grouped around a small, elongated inner courtyard. Three corners are formed by cylindrical towers covered with conical roofs. The baroque column portal of the main entrance on the east side indicates Carl Sigismund von Gellhorn. On the west side a neo-baroque garden portal shows the coat of arms of the von Saurma-Jeltsch.
