Don Chaffey

Don Chaffey (born August 5, 1917 in Hastings , East Sussex , England , † November 13, 1990 on Kawau Island , New Zealand ) was a British director .

Life

Chaffey began his career in 1945 as assistant art director on The Fall of Man , a drama starring Rex Harrison and Lili Palmer . After several films as art director, he performed in 1951 in the classic children's film recording 63 is missing! first time directing. From the mid-1950s he also worked for British television and directed, among other things, television adaptations of Robin Hood and Charlie Chan . In the 1960s he made several fantasy films , including Jason and the Argonauts , created with effects specialist Ray Harryhausen , and A Million Years Before Our Time .

The 1954 Disney production The Three Lives of Thomasina was starring Patrick McGoohan . With McGoohan he then shot 14 episodes of his series Secret Order for John Drake , as well as four episodes of his cult series number 6 . Chaffeys, filmed in the tradition of the spaghetti westerns Unter tödlicher Sonne , was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 1974 Berlin International Film Festival . In 1977 he directed Elliot, the Schmunzelmonster, a Disney production again, and subsequently worked exclusively in the USA . After his last feature film ROBODOG , which was based on an idea by Joseph Barbera , he worked as an episode director for various successful US series formats such as MacGyver and Airwolf .
