Bruce Braley (born October 30, 1957 in Grinnell , Poweshiek County , Iowa ) is an American politician . From 2007 to 2015 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bruce Braley attended Iowa State University after high school until 1980 and then until 1983 the University of Iowa , where he studied law. He then began working as a lawyer in Waterloo, Iowa. He specialized in lawsuits relating to industrial accidents and controversial layoffs. Braley also served as chairman of the Trial Lawyers Association of Iowa .

Politically, Braley joined the Democratic Party . In 2006 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Republican Jim Nussle on January 3, 2007 and was re-elected three times, most recently in 2012, so that his mandate will run until the third January 2015. Braley was most recently a member of the Trade and Energy Committee and three of its sub-committees. In the 2008 presidential elections, he initially supported John Edwards and, after his withdrawal, Barack Obama . Braley announced in February 2013 that it would run for the seat in the United States Senate , which became vacant in 2015 following the announced withdrawal of incumbent Tom Harkin . However, he was defeated by the Republican Joni Ernst . His seat in Congress went to Republican Rod Blum .

Bruce Braley has three children with his wife, Carolyn. The family lives privately in Waterloo.
