Ezekiel S. Sampson

Ezekiel Silas Sampson (born December 6, 1831 in Huron County , Ohio , † October 7, 1892 in Sigourney , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1843, Ezekiel Sampson came to Keokuk County , Iowa, where he attended public schools. He then graduated from Howe's Academy in Mount Pleasant and Knox College in Illinois . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1856, he began to work in Sigourney in his new profession. Between 1856 and 1858 Sampson served as a prosecutor and from 1861 to 1864 he took part in the American Civil War as an officer in an infantry unit of the Union Army . At the end of his military service he had made it to the position of lieutenant colonel. He then returned to Sigourney, where he again worked as a lawyer.

Politically, Sampson was a member of the Republican Party . In 1866 he was elected to the Iowa Senate. Between 1867 and 1875 he was a judge in the sixth judicial district of his state. In 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded William Loughridge on January 4, 1875 . After a re-election in 1876, Sampson could remain in Congress for two terms until March 3, 1879 . In the elections of 1878 he was defeated by James B. Weaver of the short-lived Greenback Party .

After his tenure in the House of Representatives, Sampson returned to working as a lawyer in Sigourney. He died there on October 7, 1892.
