Joseph Henry Sweney (born October 2, 1845 in Warren County , Pennsylvania , †  November 11, 1918 in Norfolk , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1891 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Sweney attended public schools in Pennsylvania and Iowa. Despite his youth, he was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War . After the war, he was a Colonel in the Iowa National Guard for four years. He then became the inspector general of this unit. After studying law at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and his admission as a lawyer in 1880, he began to practice in Osage in his new profession. There he also worked in agriculture. He also got into banking.

Sweney was a member of the Republican Party . He served in the Iowa Senate between 1883 and 1891 ; In 1886 he was its acting president. In the congressional election of 1888 Sweney was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded William E. Fuller on March 4, 1889 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Walter Halben Butler in the elections of 1890 , he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1891 .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Joseph Sweney withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died on November 11, 1918 while visiting Norfolk, Virginia and was buried in Osage.
