Solomon F. Prouty

Solomon Francis Prouty (born January 17, 1854 in Delaware , Ohio , †  July 16, 1927 in Des Moines , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1915 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1855, when he was a year old, Solomon Prouty moved to Marion County , Iowa with his father . There he attended the public schools and from 1870 to 1873 and later again until 1877 the Central University in Pella . In the meantime he was enrolled at Simpson College in Indianola from 1873 to 1875 . From 1878 to 1882 he taught himself at Central University. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1882, he began to work in his new profession in Pella. In 1891 he moved his office and residence to Des Moines; In 1899 he became a district judge there.

Politically, Prouty was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the House of Representatives from Iowa in 1880 and 1881 . In 1902, 1904 and 1908 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 1910 congressional election, Prouty was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded John AT Hull on March 4, 1911 . After a re-election in 1912, he was able to complete two consecutive terms in Congress until March 3, 1915. During this time the 16th and 17th amendments to the constitution were discussed and passed there. It was about the nationwide income tax and the direct election of the US senators .

In 1914 Prouty renounced another candidacy. In the following years he practiced again as a lawyer and was a curator at Central University. Solomon Prouty died on July 16, 1927 in Des Moines.
