Albert C. Willford
Albert Clinton Willford (born September 21, 1877 in Vinton , Iowa , † March 10, 1937 in Waterloo , Iowa) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1935 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Albert Willford attended public schools in his home country including Tilford's Academy . He then worked as an engineer for the Electric Light, Power and Water Company in Vinton between 1900 and 1907 . In 1907 he moved to Waterloo, where he was involved in ice cream making until 1910. He then went into the trade in seeds and animal feed as well as the coal trade. Between 1918 and 1930, Willford was the curator of the Waterloo Library. From 1922 to 1924 he was in Black Hawk County a member of the Jury Commission . For a year he served as president of the Iowa Stationary Engineers Association). Between 1927 and 1929 Willford served as both his state and federal director of the Izaak Walton League of America , an environmental organization founded in 1922. Willford was also president of the baseball club where he lived in Waterloo from 1923 to 1927 .
Politically, Willford was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1932 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Iowa . There he took over on March 4, 1933, succeeding Republican Thomas JB Robinson , whom he had defeated in the election. Willford's election was part of a nationwide trend in favor of the Democrats that culminated with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt as US President . Since he was defeated by the Republican John W. Gwynne in 1934 , he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1935 . During this time, the first New Deal laws were discussed and passed there.
After his time in the House of Representatives ended, Albert Willford returned to his personal and business interests in Waterloo. In 1936 he ran unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died on March 10, 1937. Until 1986, when David R. Nagle was elected, Willford would remain the last Democrat to represent the Third District of Iowa in Congress.
