William Loughridge

William Loughridge (born July 11, 1827 in Youngstown , Ohio , † September 26, 1889 in Reading , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1871 and again from 1873 to 1875 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Loughridge attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1849, he began to practice in Mansfield in his new profession. In 1852 he moved to Iowa, where he settled in Oskaloosa , Mahaska County .

Loughridge was a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . Between 1857 and 1860 he was a member of the Iowa Senate ; from 1861 to 1867 he was a judge in the Sixth Judicial District of Iowa. In the congressional elections of 1866 he was elected as a candidate for his party in the fourth constituency of Iowa in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Josiah Bushnell Grinnell on March 4, 1867 . After a re-election in 1868, he was initially able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1871 . It was during this time that President Andrew Johnson's impeachment proceedings, which failed, failed . In addition, the 14th and 15th amendments to the constitution were passed. In it, African Americans were granted citizenship and the right to vote.

In 1870 Loughridge lost to Madison Miner Walden when he was nominated for another term within the party . In the elections of 1872 he managed to get back into Congress in the sixth district. There he replaced Jackson Orr on March 4, 1873 . Since he was no longer nominated by his party in 1874, he could only complete one further legislative period in the House of Representatives until March 3, 1875. After the end of his last term in office, William Loughridge held no other important political office. He died on September 26, 1889 near Reading and was buried in Oskaloosa.
