Neal Edward Smith (born March 23, 1920 in Hedrick , Keokuk County , Iowa ) is a former American politician . Between 1959 and 1995 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Neal Smith attended the Packwood, Iowa public schools . He then interrupted his training in order to take part in the US Army's Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 in the Second World War. After the war, he attended the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Missouri from 1945 to 1946 . By 1948 he studied at Syracuse University . After a subsequent law degree at Drake University and his admission to the bar in 1950, he began to practice in his new profession. He also worked as a farmer on the side.

Between 1951 and 1952, Smith was an assistant district attorney in Polk County , Iowa. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party , whose youth organization he led between 1953 and 1955 at the federal level. From 1953 to 1954, Smith was Chairman of the Polk County Welfare Committee.

In 1958, Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Republican Paul Cunningham on January 3, 1959 . After 17 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 18 consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . Since the elections in 1972 he represented the fourth district, in which he replaced John Henry Kyl on January 3, 1973 . Between 1973 and 1975 he chaired a special committee to investigate campaign spending. From 1977 to 1981 he was a member of the Committee on Small Business . During his long term in Congress were 23 , the 24th of the 25th , the 26th and the 27th Amendment advise there and adopted.

In the 1994 election, Neal Smith lost to Greg Ganske . After that, he retired. He is married to Beatrice Haven and has two children.
