Sewall S. Farwell

Sewall Spaulding Farwell (born April 26, 1834 in Keene , Coshocton County , Ohio , † September 21, 1909 in Monticello , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sewall Farwell attended public schools in his home country, including a private school in Cleveland . In 1852 he moved to Iowa, where he worked in agriculture. During the civil war he rose to major in the Union Army . He took part in several battles.

Politically, Farwell was a member of the Republican Party . He served in the Iowa Senate from 1865 to 1869 . After that he was employed by the tax authorities from 1869 to 1873. In 1880 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Hiram Price on March 4, 1881 . But since he was defeated by the Democrat Jeremiah Henry Murphy in the following elections , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1883 .

After serving in the House of Representatives, Farwell became President of Monticello State Bank . He died on September 21, 1909 in Monticello and was buried there.
