Thomas "Tom" Latham (born July 14, 1948 in Hampton , Franklin County , Iowa ) is an American politician . From 1995 to 2015 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tom Latham attended Cal Community College in Latimer until 1966 and then Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa until 1967 . He then studied until 1970 at Iowa State University in Ames . He then ran a company that sold seeds with his brothers.

Politically, Latham joined the Republican Party . In 1992 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Houston , where US President George Bush was nominated for a second term. Bush later lost to Bill Clinton in the actual election . In 1994 , Latham was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Iowa . There he took over from Fred Grandy on January 3, 1995 . After a few re-elections, he was able to represent this district in Congress until January 3, 2003 . From the 2002 elections onwards, he ran in the fourth district of Iowa until his constituency was dissolved after the 2010 census. In the 2012 election , he therefore stood in the third constituency of Iowa against the Democratic incumbent Leonard Boswell and won, so that he represented this district in Congress from January 3, 2013. In 2014 he renounced another candidacy, so that he left the Congress on January 3, 2015. Latham was most recently a member of the Budget Committee and two of its sub-committees and is considered a moderate Republican who also works with Democratic colleagues. He was in talks for the successor to the Democratic Senator Tom Harkin , but ended the speculation with a rejection in February 2013.

He is married to Kathy Latham and lives privately in Ames.
