William G. Donnan
William G. Donnan (born June 30, 1834 in West Charlton , Saratoga County , New York , † December 4, 1908 in Independence , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Donnan attended the public schools in his home country and the Cambridge Academy . He then studied at Union College in Schenectady . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1856, he began to practice in Independence (Iowa) in his new profession. Between 1857 and 1862 he was a chamberlain and recorder in Buchanan County . During the Civil War he fought as a soldier in the Union Army from 1862. There he rose in the course of the war to the brevet major.
After the war, Donnan began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1868 and 1870 he was a member of the Iowa Senate . There he campaigned for the establishment of a state mental hospital. In the 1870 congressional election, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Iowa . There he took over from William B. Allison on March 4, 1871 . After a re-election in 1872, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1875 . In 1874 he turned down another candidacy.
After his tenure in the House of Representatives ended, Donnan returned to work as a lawyer. In 1884 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where James G. Blaine was nominated as a presidential candidate; between 1884 and 1886 he was party chairman of the Republicans in Iowa. During this time he also sat once again in the state Senate. He later also served as President of the First National Bank of Independence . William Donnan died on December 4, 1908 in Independence and was buried there.
