Rush Clark

Rush Clark (born October 1, 1834 in Schellsburg , Bedford County , Pennsylvania , †  April 29, 1879 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Rush Clark attended public schools in his home country including a school in Ligonier and Jefferson College in Canonsburg . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1853, he began his new profession in Iowa City .

Clark was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1860 and 1864 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . From 1863 he was speaker of the house. In 1861 and 1862, Clark also served on the staff of Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood . In this capacity he helped set up a volunteer unit for use in the civil war . He was also a curator for the University of Iowa between 1862 and 1866 . In 1876 he was again a member of the state parliament.

In the 1876 congressional election, Rush Clark was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fifth constituency of Iowa. There he took over from James Wilson on March 4, 1877 . After re-election in 1878, he could remain in Congress until his death on April 29, 1879 . He died suddenly in the Capitol of an attack of meningitis.
