John R. Schmidhauser (1965)

John Richard Schmidhauser (born January 3, 1922 in the Bronx , New York City , † February 21, 2018 in Santa Barbara , California ) was an American politician and political scientist . Between 1965 and 1967 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After attending primary school Schmidhauser took the soldier as a US Marine on World War II in part. He then studied until 1949 at the University of Delaware in Newark and then until 1954 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, among other things philosophy. From 1954 to 1965 he lectured at the University of Iowa in Iowa City . There he was employed as a professor.

Politically, Schmidhauser joined the Democratic Party . In 1964 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Iowa . On January 3, 1965, he succeeded the Republican Fred Schwengel , whom he had defeated in the elections. But since he lost again to Schwengel in the following elections in 1966, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1967 .

After his time in the House of Representatives, John Schmidhauser was again a professor at the University of Iowa from 1967 to 1973. In 1972 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the congressional elections. Between 1973 and 1992 he was a professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles . There he was last listed as a professor emeritus. In the 1980s, Schmidhauser held lectures at various other universities for a short time in addition to his work in Los Angeles.
