Robert Sassone (born November 23, 1978 in Nouméa ; † January 21, 2016 ) was a French cyclist .

Career

Robert Sassone was a specialist in two-man team driving . In 2001 he became world champion in this discipline together with Jérôme Neuville . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he finished tenth together with Christophe Capelle . In 2003 Robert Sassone won the Vice World Championship in scratch in Stuttgart . Sassone was able to win the six-day race in Nouméa at home five times ; his standard partner was Jean-Michel Tessier . Otherwise he mainly drove smaller road races in Europe, but also the Vuelta a España 2002 , which he finished in 217th overall.

In 2004 Robert Sassone, who was a member of the Équipe Cofidis until the end of 2003 , was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with probation in the course of the Cofidis affair for possession of doping drugs. After his last victory in the six-day race in Nouméa in 2003, he had also tested positive for doping. During searches of the house of Sassone and his wife, a cyclist, in Hyères in the south of France , EPO , amphetamines and anabolic steroids were found. In an open letter he apologized publicly for his "mistake", including a. on the grounds that "the world of cycling is merciless". As a result, Sassone, who had been considered great hope for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, ended his career.

Robert Sassone committed suicide in 2016 at the age of 37 after developing cancer . After Frank Vandenbroucke († 2009) and Philippe Gaumont († 2013), he was the third driver of the former Équipe Cofidis involved in the Cofidis affair, who died at a young age.
