TV5 Monde (until 2006 TV5 ) is an international French-speaking television channel that is broadcast worldwide via satellite and cable . It is carried by public broadcasters in the four French-speaking countries of France , Belgium , Switzerland and Canada . In terms of its concept, it corresponds roughly to the German-language television broadcaster 3sat . According to its own information, TV5Monde is now the second largest international television broadcaster after MTV .
Emergence
TV5 was founded on January 2, 1984 by the French broadcasters TF1 , Antenne 2 (today: France 2 ) and FR 3 (today: France 3 ), as well as the Belgian RTBF and the Swiss TSR . Since there were five founding members, TV 5 was chosen as the name . In 1986 a consortium of program organizers from Québec and other parts of Canada joined them. In 1987 TF1 left the association after its privatization.

Management and structure
Yves Bigot has been General Manager since January 2013.
According to Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to revise the public service media, the station was to be merged with France24 and named FranceMonde . However, the other broadcasters involved in TV5 turned against the predominant role of France and against a name that makes too strong a reference to France.

Program content
TV5 mostly broadcasts programs from the shareholders and partner stations and is a full program . Domestic news programs in the four countries are broadcast throughout the day, but TV5 also broadcasts its own news programs every four hours.
Certain programs such as series, films or magazines are also offered with subtitles in ten different languages, including German. The German subtitles can be found via TV5 Monde Europe's DVB mode. With digital satellite or cable reception, they can be selected directly via the receiver and automatically in the picture with analog cable reception. The subtitles were also broadcast on teletext until the beginning of 2011, but then stopped.
Hacker attack 2015
TV5 was the victim of a hacking attack on April 8, 2015, during which IS propaganda was spread. Unknown people had interrupted the broadcast of the television program for several hours and at the same time took over the website and the accounts on social networks. During the attack, ISIS propaganda material was disseminated and the French soldiers in the Middle East and their families were threatened with death. French authorities directed their investigation into the case in the summer of 2015 against a group of Russian hackers who were eventually identified as APT 28 . The damage amounted to several million.
At 6 p.m. (UTC + 1 daylight saving time) on the same day, the station resumed the program.
