France 24 (spoken: France vingt-quatre [fʁɑ̃s vɛ̃tkatʁ] ), the French international television station with a focus on news, began broadcasting on December 6, 2006. The program, which conveys international news from a French perspective, is based on models such as BBC World News and DW-TV . It is organized by TF1 and the public broadcasters that are united under the umbrella of France Télévisions .
history
Originally, the station should be called Chaîne française d'information internationale (CFII) . Initially, the program was broadcast in Europe , Africa and the Near and Middle East via satellite or cable and worldwide via the Internet. In order to appeal to a wider audience, it is broadcast in French , English, as well as Arabic and Spanish . At the request of President Jacques Chirac, it was originally intended to broadcast exclusively in French in order to counter the supremacy of the English-language news channel CNN .
According to President Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to restructure the public service media, the station was to be merged with TV5 and named "FranceMonde". Meanwhile, the rest of the broadcasters involved in TV5 turned against the dominant role of France and against a name with too strong a connection to France. A final decision is still pending.
The station is currently free to receive via the Astra 19.2 ° East , Eutelsat Hotbird and Atlantic Bird 3 satellites and, since August 1, 2011, via Telekom Entertain . There is also a live stream on the station's homepage.
France 24 and the French international radio station Radio France Internationale (RFI) were merged in February 2012 under the umbrella of Audiovisuel Extérieur de la France (AEF). Massive protests by employees and listeners had no effect.
