William J. Scherle

William Joseph Scherle (born March 14, 1923 in Little Falls , Herkimer County , New York , †  August 27, 2003 in Council Bluffs , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1975 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Scherle attended St. Mary's Academy in New York City . During World War II , he served in the US Navy between 1942 and 1946 . Until 1954 he was still a member of the reserve for this branch of service. Between 1945 and 1947 he studied at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas . There he was also deputy department head of the George D. Barnard Co. in 1947. Since 1948, Scherle worked as a farmer and rancher.

Politically, Scherle became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1956 and 1964 he was its chairman in Mills County , Iowa. From 1960 to 1966, Scherle was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . In 1966 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded John R. Hansen on January 3, 1967 . Scherle represented the seventh district until it was dissolved in 1972. After that, he moved to the fifth electoral district in 1973 as the successor to Neal Edward Smith . Overall, he completed four consecutive terms in Congress between January 3, 1967 and January 3, 1975 . During this time the 25th and 26th amendments to the Constitution were discussed and passed. It was about the succession plan for the office of President and the lowering of the voting age to 18 years. The end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair also fell during this period .

In the 1974 elections, Scherle lost to Tom Harkin of the Democratic Party . That defeat was then the federal trend in favor of the Democrats, who profited from the Republican crisis caused by the Watergate affair. Then Scherle worked from 1975 to 1977 for the Ministry of Agriculture; between 1977 and 1987 he was president of a consulting firm in Washington. After that, he retired. William Scherle died on August 27, 2003 in Council Bluffs and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
