Joseph Rea Reed

Joseph Rea Reed (born March 12, 1835 in Ashland County , Ohio , † April 2, 1925 in Council Bluffs , Iowa ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1889 and 1891 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Reed attended the public schools of his home country and then between 1854 and 1857 the Vermillion Institution in Hayesville . In 1857, Reed moved to Dallas County , Iowa. After a subsequent law school and its made in 1859 admitted to the bar, he started in his new place of residence nobility to practice in his new profession. During the Civil War , Reed was an officer in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. He achieved the rank of captain at the end of the war. After the war he continued his legal work in the nobility.

Politically, Reed was a member of the Republican Party . He was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1866 and 1868 . In 1869, Reed moved to Council Bluffs. He was a District Court Judge from 1872 to 1884, and a Judge of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1884 to 1889 . In 1888 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Iowa . There he took over from Joseph Lyman on March 4, 1889 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Thomas Bowman in the 1890 elections, he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1891 .

Between 1891 and 1904, Reed presided over the United States Court of Private Land Claims , a federal court that dealt with private land claims. He then returned to work as a lawyer in Council Bluffs. Joseph Reed died on April 2, 1925 at the age of 90.
