Hiram Y. Smith

Hiram Ypsilanti Smith (born March 22, 1843 in Piqua , Ohio , †  November 4, 1894 in Des Moines , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1884 and 1885 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1850, Hiram Smith and his parents came to Rock Island , Illinois, and in 1854, Des Moines, Iowa. There he attended public schools. In 1861 he became a member of the militia to take part in some battles against the Indians . From January 1862 to February 1864 Smith was employed by the Department of Post in the federal capital Washington . He then worked for the Ministry of Finance until 1865. After a subsequent law degree at the Albany Law School in Albany ( New York ) and his admission as a lawyer in 1866, he began to work in Des Moines in his new profession. Between 1875 and 1879 he was a district attorney in the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa.

Smith was a member of the Republican Party . From 1882 to 1884 he was a member of the Iowa Senate . After the resignation of Congressman John A. Kasson , Smith was elected in the seventh constituency of Iowa as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington. There he ended between December 2, 1884 and March 3, 1885 the legislative term of his predecessor. In the regular congressional election of 1884, Smith no longer ran.

At the end of his brief tenure in Congress , Hiram Smith retired from politics. In the following years until his death in November 1894 he worked again as a lawyer.
