John Taylor Hamilton

John Taylor Hamilton (born October 16, 1843 in Geneseo , Henry County , Illinois , †  January 25, 1925 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Hamilton attended public schools in his home country including the Geneseo Academy . In 1868 he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he traded in agricultural supplies. In 1878 he was elected mayor of Cedar Rapids. Between 1882 and 1884 Hamilton was a member of the county council of Linn County . He also became President of Cedar Rapids Savings Bank and Electric Lights Company .

Politically, Hamilton was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1885 and 1891 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Iowa ; there he was temporarily president of the house. In 1890 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Daniel Kerr on March 4, 1891 . Since he was defeated by the Republican Robert G. Cousins in the elections of 1892 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 .

After his tenure in the House of Representatives, he continued his business career at Cedar Rapids. He worked in various industries. In 1899 he became President of Merchants National Bank . Between 1906 and 1909 he was a member of the Iowa State Audit Committee. In 1914, John Hamilton ran unsuccessfully for governor of Iowa. He was subject to the incumbent George W. Clarke . John Hamilton died on January 25, 1925 in Cedar Rapids and was buried there.
