From 1675 to 1678 he studied logic and metaphysics, later theology, in Ingolstadt at the Jesuit college. In 1688 he became professor of mathematics in Innsbruck, where he was court preacher from 1689 to 1692. Orban began building up a collection of art and natural objects in Innsbruck. He initially completed positions in Burghausen (1692–1695), Landshut (until 1703), Düsseldorf (as confessor to Elector Johann Wilhelm 1703–1716) and again Landshut (1719–1722). During his time in Düsseldorf, Orban used an observatory that had been built on the roof of the Jesuit college there.

In 1722 Orban was transferred to the Jesuit College in Ingolstadt. In 1725 the Jesuits built their own museum building for the Orbans Collection in the garden of the Ordenskolleg, the Orbansaal, a long hall with light on both sides. The collection included mathematical and physical instruments, handicrafts from the Far East, part of the Turkish booty from 1683, textiles, weapons, coins, small sculptures, stone carvings, paintings, minerals, shells and insects.
