Carlos Sommervogel (born January 8, 1834 in Strasbourg , † May 4, 1902 in Paris ) was a French Jesuit and bibliographer who created a list of references with the Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus ( Library of the Society of Jesus ), which is still used today is still considered an important work on Jesuit writings.

Live and act

After attending grammar school in Strasbourg, Carlos Sommervogel became a novice in the Jesuit novitiate in Issenheim . After completing his literary studies in Saint-Acheul near Amiens , he was sent to the Collège de l'Immaculée Conception on Rue de Vaugirard in Paris in 1856 . There he began to work at the Bibliothèque des écrivains de la Compagnie de Jésus , which was published at the time by the Belgian Jesuits August (in) de Backer (1809–1873) and Aloys de Backer . In 1865 he left Paris to study theology in Amiens , where he was ordained a priest in 1866 received.

After various uses, he was able to devote himself entirely to his bibliographical interests from 1882. In 1884 he published the Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes et pseudonymes publiés par des religieux de la Compagnie de Jésus . In 1885 he was appointed the successor to the de Backers in Leuven , Belgium . Until his death he worked on expanding the work of the de Backers. In 1890 he published the first volume of the Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus , the last of the nine volumes appeared in 1900.

In addition to this great work, he published a variety of different books, writings and articles.
