history

In the early Middle Ages the place belonged to the Benedictine abbey of Murbach . In 1229 Issenheim passed to the Habsburgs . At the end of the 13th century, the Antonite Order founded a branch here. Above all, the Antonites cared for the people who were afflicted by the Antonius fire, a disease that slowly and painfully leads to death. At the beginning of the 16th century, Matthias Grünewald created the Isenheim Altar for the Antonite Monastery , which can now be seen in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Issenheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Gebweiler district in the Upper Alsace district .
